The Fine Art of store Displays

Imagine seeing this after a long, dusty, dry drive

During my time with Whole Foods Market, I learnt the finer art of Visual Merchandising. Nothing will help you sell than having a beautiful, fresh display of whatever it is that want to see walking out the door, inside of a customers shopping bag.I have long since believed that seven is the most intriguing of all numbers, so many of my practices involve this magic digit. So I find no better use for it now, to give you my seven rules of Visual Displays.

  • Begin with who your trying to reach. No point making a Game of Thrones themed window if you´re working in a children's store.
  • Find Some Inspiration. Google, read, ask around or just do what I do. Go for a walk around the block. Helps clear your head and you always find inspiration in the weirdest place.
  • Use all five senses, not just the eyes. Smells, Tastes, Sounds, Touching all these senses sell just as much as how something looks, especially is you work with food.
  • Show, Don't Tell. Have the displayed items set up in a mock home or office setting. Why take an hour telling someone how good the coffee table would look in their house when you can show them.
  • Match like with like. Grapes next to cheese,  complementing tops with trousers, popcorn next to DVDs. You get the idea
  • Let Light Dictate Mood and Attention. Bad lighting equels poor sales.
  • The Rule of Three.Three flavours, three sizes, three colors. Like seven, three is another favourite number of mine. Groups of threes always appeal to the eyes.

I hope you find this useful and Happy displaying!
